One hundred years ago, the Milwaukee Road line across Washington was still very new having opened for business in 1909. Cle Elum (located in the Town of South Cle Elum) was a busy place on the railroad back then. It was a division point for the Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway (a subsidiary of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, aka Milwaukee Road), with the Coast Division extending west to Puget Sound and the Columbia Division stretching across the state to the east. Train crews from one division would hand their trains off to crews from the other division. Steam locomotives would change as well, and they’d be serviced in the roundhouse so they’d be ready to take another train back in the other direction across the division. All of this activity at Cle Elum required a lot of employees to do the work. Below is a list of the people living in South Cle Elum either listed as Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway employees or listed with a railroad occupation but no employer identified.
