We have ambitious plans for the South Cle Elum Rail Yard in 2018. In addition to continuing our work to beat back the trees and sagebrush, we plan to build some track, improve the signage along the street, refurbish the exterior of our caboose, and construct a much needed dumpster enclosure for the depot parking lot.
Our priorities this spring are vegetation management, building the dumpster enclosure, and laying track.
Washington State Parks now has a requirement that volunteers using power tools and equipment (chain saws, mowers, etc.) in a state park receive safety training from them. We have scheduled a training on Saturday, March 31 between 10 am and 11 am, at the beginning of our work party. If you’d like to help us by using power tools and equipment, this is likely the only Saturday training session we will be able to hold this year. We may be able to schedule a weekday training session if you can’t make it on March 31. You must RSVP if you are interested in attending the training session.
If you can’t make it to a training session or don’t want to use power tools, we still have plenty of work for you to do in the rail yard!
Here is our schedule for the spring and the work we plan to do.
- March 31 Volunteer training, rail sorting and vegetation management
- POSTPONED
April 21-22Dumpster enclosure construction, vegetation management, and possibly other tasks - May 26 Track work, rail yard vegetation maintenance
If you can join us, please RSVP so we can plan the work and contact you if plans change. Show up dressed for dirty work and bring your favorite work gloves and any other appropriate personal protection equipment. Bring your own tools if you can.
We plan to schedule additional work parties this year, so stay tuned.
The more volunteers we get, the more we can accomplish this year.
