The Cascade Rail Foundation projects, such as the renovation of the South Cle Elum Depot, establishing the Depot Cafe, organizing and hosting the Rails-To-Ales Brewfest event, among others, require the concerted efforts of many groups and individuals. CRF is a non-profit organization funded by public and private contributors. To support this project, please click our "Contribute" page.  We are deeply grateful to the following donors for helping make our rehabilitation of the South Cle Elum Depot and other projects possible.

Iron Horse State ParkIron Horse State Park/John Wayne Pioneer Trail is a non-motorized trail that begins at Cedar Falls in the Cascade Mountains and extends 109 miles east to the Columbia River near Vantage. The trail includes high train trestles with spectacular views of the valley below, cool dark train tunnels, mountainous terrain, sagebrush desert, arid scrublands and charming countryside farmlands of the Columbia Basin. For more information please visit www.parks.wa.gov.
Depot CafeThe Depot Cafe is located directly at the railroad crossing of appetite and nostalgia. Nestled inside the Milwaukee Road depot in South Cle Elum, the railroad atmosphere is genuine. Hailing back to the days when "The Beanery" was THE place for hungry engineers, conductors, and every sort of Milwaukee Road worker to satisfy a well earned appetite, the tradition lives on at the Depot Cafe.

Milwaukee Road in
Neighboring Communities:

Milwaukee Road in the town of Kittitas, WA The Milwaukee Road in the town of Kittitas, WA Site excerpt: "Kittitas was constructed as part of the westward expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad, the Kittitas Yard and Depot Became the center of the community of Kittitas: one of the many small, agricultural towns that sprang up along the railroad lines. The railroad linked Kittitas to other small communities and the rest of the country, providing farmers and business people a way to sell their products in other towns and cities."
Milwaukee Road in Ellensburg, WA The Milwaukee Road in Ellensburg, WA Site excerpt: "The Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad ("Milwaukee Road") a very successful regional line, began to shadow the Northern Pacific to Puget Sound. Coming directly West from Lind, Washington through Ellensburg, the Milwaukee Road cut approximately 100 miles off the distance between Spokane and Seattle. Furthermore, the Milwaukee eventually added the competitive edge of electric engines through the Rocky Mountains between Avery, Idaho and Harlowton, Montana, and through the Cascade Mountains between Othello and Seattle, Washington. ( Electrification through the mountains is a story within itself.)"
Milwaukee Road in Othello, WA The Milwaukee Road in Othello, WA Site excerpt: "THE PLAN - A 1946 Milwaukee Road Caboose, designed and built in the railroad's shops, will be restored as an Interpretive Center for the public and school groups, open five days weekly and by appointment. It's funding is by grants and contributions, and is entirely separate from The Old Hotel's operating budget. VISITORS MAY ENTER from it's platform or from the gallery's side exit to view an exhibit of The Milwaukee in Othello, 1906-80, presented in photo/narrative form. A replica Conductor's Work Station is planned. IS THIS CABOOSE IMPORTANT? We think so, for without it's original railroad economy our community would not have been in place for today's agriculture. Few Othello adults, and none of our children remember the Milwaukee today."
Milwaukee Road in Tacoma, WA The Milwaukee Road in Tacoma Site excerpt: "In Tacoma, the nexus of operations for the Coast Division--where you think with the shops and offices and yards that employees would most be wary of trespassers--well, I think quite a few employees were flattered that someone would take the time to show interest in what their railroad was doing."
Milwaukee Road in Morton, WA The Milwaukee Road in Morton, WA Site excerpt: "Relocation and restoration of the Morton Depot has been a 20 year dream of the Historical Society. Built in 1910, the two story frame building is one of the last of this type of Milwaukee stations in existence today. The advent of the train opened the area to commerce and economic prosperity as well as travel. The Depot offers a focal point for Morton to capture and increase tourist activity. This has been identified in several studies including the East Lewis County Railroad Restoration Project of 2000, Highway 12, Charette and Morton Revitalization Plans of 2002. A study done by the Great American Station Foundation confirms that there is a positive economic impact on communities created through depot restoration."

Clubs & Organizations:

Milwaukee Road Historical Association The Milwaukee Road Historical Association is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1972 and chartered with the State of Wisconsin to study and preserve the history of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (The Milwaukee Road) from its inception in 1850 to its acquisition by the Soo Line Railroad in 1985. MRHA is not affiliated with any railroad company. It is recognized as the official historical body dealing with The Milwaukee Road, its predecessors and its subsidiaries.
Milwest Milwest - A Milwaukee RR "Lines West" Historical Society Dedicated to preservation of the former CM&PS, CM&StP, CMStP&P, and Milwaukee Road "Lines West". An organization of rail historians and modelers, established in 1987 as nonprofit corporation, with a common interest in The Milwaukee Road's former "Lines West" and associated lines. This includes all former Milwaukee Road operations, rolling stock, structures, and employees west from Mobridge, South Dakota. The time period of interest is between the beginning of the railroad's Puget Sound extension (authorized in late 1905) to the "embargo"/sale of the remaining lines in 1980 to 1985, and all remaining segments still in operation by successor companies. MilWest was started in Spokane, Washington when a few railfan/modelers got together and decided they wanted to preserve and share some of the greatness that had been the Milwaukee Road "Lines West" with its unique features such as electrification, concrete bridges and five mountain range crossings. It was decided to hold a meeting on an annual basis. These annual meets are held in the East (Montana) and West (Idaho, Washington) on alternate years.
